It has been quite a while since I have watched another horseman clinician other than Pat Parelli. Last night there was nothing on TV when I finally got home, so I found myself tuning into RFD-TV just to see horses. There were two VERY popular clinicians that were on back to back. I sat through them both. I must say I was struck by how desperate they sounded trying to make an impression. There were moments I believe they were attempting to sound like Pat Parelli. One went so far as to talk about knowing the personality of the horse, but never explained just how to accomplish that.

Constant talking coupled with intense intention with the horse made it hard to watch. Does Pat have intense intention with his horses? Absolutely, but no one has the finesse that Pat does. His ease of transition in everything he does is mindbogglingly smooth. Pat approaches horse and human with such savvy, intelligence and elegance that he truly embodies what it means to have mastered a skill so well that it appears completely effortless. Yet, those of us in Parelli for the long haul understand what he has truly accomplished. We love watching the dance Pat and aspire to do the same. Thank you for creating such beauty in horsemanship.

It dawns on me as I sit here thinking about what to do for the Mama’s in my family for Mother’s Day, that there are now holidays and events that I will experience I never thought I would. You see, I will be 40 this year and I just gave birth to my first child in January. I didn’t think motherhood was going to be in my life outside of all of my four legged babies.

Now, as I ponder on it, it thrills me that I get to experience all these ”new” things, the holiday of Mother’s day and Father’s day with my husband. There will be sweet trips to the zoo, circus, theme parks and ice capades. Totally focused on my little man’s reaction to it all. The wonders of everything new to him as he explores this world for the first time. What will capture his interest? What will make him feel like he could conquer the world? What will make him laugh and cry? I can only wonder. The prospects excite me.

I am always amazed at these Lady Long Riders who set off to ride thousands of miles alone. What kind of courage does it take as a woman and horsewoman to complete such a journey? Do they have it from the beginning or do they find it on the trail? Once they have it …. do they keep it or does self doubt plague them just as it does those of us who have never taken such a risk?

For all you ladies out there who fear going anywhere alone whether it be to the local store or on a cross country trip, here is another amazing Lady Long Rider, Tracey Elliot-Reep, who rode from the southern tip of Texas through the rockies and into Canada for a total of 3000 miles on horseback by herself. She blends her love of the open trail with photography. Her website boasts photography books of her journeys here and in Europe.

The Long Riders Guild exemplifies this concept. A collection of riders who through hundreds of years have relied on their horse to carry them distances most of us have never seen in a car much less step by step on the back of a horse. The stories are mesmerizing. I will continue to post my favorites, but www.longridersguild.com warehouses extensive information on equestrian travel and those that dare embrace it.

There is more than enough opinions in the horse world. Some people follow one or maybe two trainers while others glean from every source they can. For me and MY journey the program that has taught me how to get the most consistent results in me and my horse is Parelli Natural Horsemanship.

Why I chose Parelli: I bought my first horse in the fall of 2003. I bought Ben, my now ten year old Tennessee Walking Horse who back then was an emotional wreck. He had come out of the show barns in Tennessee and it quickly became apparent that he had almost been completely ruined. It took a team of us to help him turn around, but his most dramatic and lasting emotional changes came after I started studying Parelli Natural Horsemanship. The program just made total sense to me and I found that it was my greatest tool to help Ben regain emotional safety and confidence.

Why I stay: In Jamie Jackson’s book Paddock Paradise he says, “To learn from the wild horse we must first find him. To find him we must know something of his world.” It struck me that what Jamie Jackson means environmentally, Pat Parelli means it psychologically. Pat aims to take us on a journey through the mental and emotional world of our horses, showing us equine psychological truths. By doing so he puts us on the path of finding that willing partner we all dream of. In the process we discover a LOT about ourselves. We find areas unbalanced and in need of rebalancing. Many of us experience deep healing as a result. That’s me. I found my voice and that is why I stay.

This is the story of the open trail, a very long one…. 7000 miles to be exact. You would think that kind of distance would be done by plane, car or boat. Not for Bernice Ende, retired ballet teacher from Trego, Montana. She is doing it with three of her best friends by foot or hoof if you will. Bernice, along with her rescued Thoroughbred, Honor, her pack horse, Essie Pearl, and her rescued dog, Claire, has set out on a 7000 mile, two and a half year journey that started March 20th, 2009 in Trego.

Her ride will take her to the coast of Washington state, through great state of Texas, up through the Ohio Valley, by the Great Lakes and across every Canadian province until she arrives safely back home in Montana. Check out the map of her proposed ride and the latest pictures and news from the trail here http://www.endeofthetrail.com/index.html. If you are feeling a little generous Bernice rides on sponsors and donations from individuals. For a beautiful video of her 2008, 3000 mile ride look no further than right here…

In the baby days of birthing my blog I have ventured out to other blog sites to seek out design ideas. What I find as I explore this vast web we call the internet is I am mesmerized by the blogosphere as it exists today. It truly is a vast ocean of possibilities. Unlimited human potential spilled out on page upon page of creative work. A portal into the collective genius. I would like to think I would become a healthy conisseur of the sights and sounds, but I feel an obsession coming on.

Finding blogs designed with such precision that the content of their words takes center stage is a thrill. The page itself becomes just as much a piece of art as an oil painting hanging in any museum around the world and yet it’s dynamic and evolving. There is mystery and intrigue and the “can’t wait to see what happens next” anticipation just like your favorite TV drama.

Unfolding pieces of art… layer upon layer of human development. The largest collective sharing medium in the world. The cognitive prowess of man displayed for all to see around the world in real time. Fascinating….
